Customers Get Cash for Their Clunkers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Scattered across the Mid-South there's no shortage of clunkers.

Susan Woods says, "It was a '99 Jeep Cherokee Sport."

Denise Browder says, "I had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee."

Susan Woods and Denise Browder both traded in their used and abused Jeeps to cash in on a new government incentive giving them more than the market value for their vehicles.

Woods says, "We weren't probably gonna get $500 for that clunker we had."

On the lot at Landers Ford and Mercury the clunkers that they've given cash for line the back of their lot.

Kent Ritchey says, "We did 13 of these deals alone yesterday. The US government owes me $100,000 in rebates on this program I just hope I can get my money."

The catch if you can call it that is that consumers qualify for the Cash for Clunkers deal as long as they trade up…not in price but in miles per gallon.

Ritchey says, "If you've owned it for a year you've had it insured for a year and the gas mileage is 18 miles per gallon or less you are probably eligible."

The Car Allowance Rebate System is a one billion dollar government program that allows those with vehicles less than 25 years old that achieves a combined 18 miles per gallon or less to get rid of their clunker and opt for a new more eco-friendly vehicle.

Woods says, "I was excited about looking for something newer and better gas mileage."

The savings and incentive comes at the cost of the billion dollar program that will give you up $4,500 to use on the purchase of a new vehicle.

Browder says, "For those of us who probably need new cars and just are looking for that great deal, how can you pass up $4,500."

But some say coming soon there might be a shortage on the cash that's being used to buy clunkers.

Ritchey says, "The problem were going to have is knowing when to stop before the money runs out. We'll never make it to November 1st. It wouldn't surprise me if we don't make it to August 1st."
